Giacomo Manzù - 1977
When his hometown of Bergamo asked Giacomo Manzù – a leading sculptor – to produce a monument to the Resistance, he responded with a work of devastating power, accompanied by the dedication: Partigiano, ti ho visto appeso immobile… (Partisan, I saw you hanging immobile…) Subsequently, the artist was attacked in the Catholic press, and with the local council divided, former concentration camp prisoner Eugenio Bruni intervened, explaining “The monument shows a man who has given his life for freedom. Each of us may see in it every man who sacrifices his life for freedom and justice”.
