Donato Calvi - 1676
An Augustinian monk and refined intellectual, Donato Calvi was the founder of the Accademia degli Eccitati. In 1676, he published his Effemeride sagro-profana, a curious work, structured in calendar form, from January to December, relating noteworthy events occurring in Bergamo from its origins to the author’s present day. Under 9 August, we can read the following entry regarding the city fair.
During the night, a terrible and tragic fire devastated the Fair of Bergamo, ruining countless merchants and causing six hundred thousand gold scudi’s worth of damage. A thief know as Il Tedesco was arrested for having stolen various goods and was hanged without mercy.
